NEW PICTURES

I have uploaded a few new pictures to the Gallery pages recently, after a break of a few months during which I have been attending to more pressing matters.  The pictures include one of the SS "St. Clair" (the second of the "North" boats to bear that name) in heavy sea conditions off Buchan Ness.  There is also a commissioned work of the last ro-ro cargo ship "St. Rognvald" south of Sumburgh Head, and another of the Wick seine-netter "Star of Peace" entering her home port in lively weather.

I am currently working on "portraits" of some of the old Yell seine-net vessels, and the first of these is the "Madalia", the earlier of two vessels to bear that name.  Another two boats which I remember from this island are the "Ros Donn" and "Halcyon", which are my next two projects.   This is in connection with my forthcoming exhibition in Yell, more details of which are below.

EXHIBITION 2008

I'm holding an exhibition at the Old Haa, Burravoe on the Shetland island of Yell, commencing on the 29th June 2008.  I hope that many people come to see this excellent museum and gallery, if not to see my artworks, then to browse among the many other artefacts and exhibits which give a fascinating insight into Shetland's past.

I hope you enjoy looking at my work, and would appreciate any comments.  Thank you for all your messages.

A peaceful summer morning in Lerwick Harbour, with the herring fleet lying in port.  In late afternoon or early evening, this scene would change dramatically, as hundreds of steam and motor drifters would head out to sea to search for the herring shoals, leaving the harbour largely deserted.  The herring fishing was carried out overnight, any catches being landed again in the morning.  If the fishing was good, the harbour became a hive of industry, with gutters, coopers and fishermen struggling to land, gut, pack and store the day's catch.

This picture is 36 x 24 inches, was painted in oils on hardboard, and is priced at £950 including framing and postage.

"Statsraad Lehmkuhl"

Statsraad Lehmkuhl.jpg

This beautiful barque, registered in Bergen, Norway, is a frequent visitor to Lerwick, and she makes a fine sight as she sets sail south of Lerwick harbour.   Built in 1914, she is 84.7 metres long, and is a training vessel, operated by the Stiftelsen Seilskipet Statsraad Lehmkuhl.  She regularly takes part in European Tall Ships Races.
