Aberdeen Trawler "Doreen Johnston"

This vessel had an interesting history.  She was built, in Glasgow, for the Admiralty, in 1919, as the steam trawler "William Gillett", but was later renamed "Adastra", before being bought by William and James C Johnston of Edinburgh, renamed "Doreen Johnston" and registered in Granton (GN27).  In 1952, she was bought by owners in Aberdeen, renamed "George R Wood", and converted to diesel power in 1958, her tall smokestack being a casualty of the conversion.  She was sold on to English owners around 1970, given her 5th and last name of "Netherley", and finally scrapped in 1971.

This seascape oil painting depicts her, during her steam-powered days, off Sumburgh Head in Shetland.  It was commissioned by A. Johnson, Aberdeen.
