Lerwick Harbour during 1930s

A summer scene at Lerwick harbour during the 1930s.  The herring fishing is in full swing, and the fleet is taking advantage of a few hour's rest in the afternoon before heading for the grounds again in the early evening.  By mid-evening, the harbour will be empty.

The boats which took part in this fishery came chiefly, but not exclusively, from mainland Scottish ports and from the east coast of England, with a fair number of Shetland vessels involved too. The nearest row of boats featured in the painting are from Burra Isle and Lerwick.

This harbour scene in oils is 36 x 24 inches in size, and was painted on canvas for Magnus Schmidt, of Saltsjobaden, Sweden and Peymeinade, Provence.
