The "Solan IV" is a motor boat whose main purpose is ferrying people and sheep from her base at Sandsayre, Sandwick, Shetland, to the uninhabited island of Mousa., which boasts the most perfectly-preserved Pictish broch in Britain. This means that the island plays host to many visitors with archaeological and historical interests; hence the need for regular transport to and from the island. The sheep need a lift too!
The picture was commissioned as a retirement gift for Tom Jamieson, who ran the service for many years. It is 24 x 18 inches in size, and was painted in oils on hardboard.
