The second vessel to bear the name "St. Sunniva", for the North of Scotland, Orkney and Shetland Steam Navigation Company Ltd., entered service in 1931, to replace the first vessel to do so. The latter had run aground in fog on the island of Mousa, and was a total loss two weeks later, although all passengers and crew had been rescued from the stricken vessel.
The second "St. Sunniva" was less lucky. During admiralty service on the east coast of Canada during WWII, she was lost with all hands, the most mooted reason for her loss being a build-up of ice.
I have painted her several times, this latest version being commissioned by Bernie Edwardson of Lerwick. It is 24 x 18 inches in size, and was painted in oils on hardboard.
